Family Connections is a brand new, community initiative from Somerset Film supported by The Engine Room with funding from the Big Lottery. The initiative aims to deliver a series of workshops and outreach projects in each of 5 districts in Somerset, starting with Highbridge, over the next 3 years...

This initiative draws on 12 years experience accumulated by Somerset Film delivering community media activities in Somerset and takes a fun, creative and collaborative approach to families learning together with digital media.

Family Connections will offer 400 families the opportunity
to have fun and learn together using film, photography
and digital media. Whether it’s learning the basics of using a computer, or finding out how to surf, skype and blog. Making short films and building websites or learning to
get more out of a mobile phone. Taking better photos of family and friends, even having a go at Wallace & Gromit style animation.

Family Connections will be a chance to get hands-on with powerful software and equipment with skilled tutors on hand to help get the best out of the experience.

As well as the fun and satisfaction to be had from the creative activities on hand, Family Connections will offer opportunities to learn new skills, to better support children in the safe use of the internet, to put individuals and families in a stronger place to take advantage of further learning and work opportunities in the future.

Activities will take place when families can get there –
after schools, evenings and weekends – and at convenient locations. Nearly 300 hours of tutor support time will be available in each of the 5 locations with additional facilities at The Engine Room media centre in Bridgwater run by Somerset Film. People taking part will be able to access
a dedicated website for all the projects to be showcased
and shared.
