Haven't decided if you want to apply for our 2018 BFI Film Academy yet?
Natalie Collings, our BFI Film Academy Co-ordinator and previous BFI Film Academy participant has answered some of your questions to help you decide if the BFI Film Academy is right for you... She also has some top tips on how to make your application stand out from the rest!
Who are you looking to apply for the Film Academy?
We are looking for passionate, film loving 16-19 year olds who either enjoy making, watching or reviewing film.
Ideally you should be looking to pursue a career in film, however we understand that you may not know exactly which area you would like to go into just yet!
There are lots of areas within film industry that you could be interested in including make up, acting, costume design as well as the more traditional filmmaker roles of director, scriptwriter, sound recordist (the list goes on and on...). We encourage you to apply no matter what area you have a passion for!
The Academy is open to all abilities and backgrounds. If you have any additional needs or a disability then don't be put off applying. Let us know on your application form and we will be in touch to let you know what we can do to make sure that the course is accessible to you.
TOP TIP! Make sure your application includes as much detail as possible, we want to know what it is that you love about film and if possible, what work you have already created (no matter how big or small). You once made a film of your pet hamster saving the world?.. we want to see it! You were inspired to pursue a career in film after watching Sharknado 2?.. tell us about it!
I have no previous experience of actually making a film - is that okay?
Absolutely, you don't need to have previous experience in filmmaking, as long as you have passion and a willingness to learn then you could still be accepted onto the course. Just make sure your application shines and you put that passion onto paper.
If you do have some filmmaking experience then we always like to have a look at your work so make sure you include links to films that you have made.
TOP TIP! If you don't have a film why not have a go at making one for your application? grab a phone or camera and make a short 60 second film! we'd love to see what you can come up with.
Are there other opportunities that I can get involved in after the course has finished?
Once the Academy at Somerset Film has finished you will get the opportunity to apply for exciting BFI Residential Programmes across the UK - including the BFI Film Academy Craft Residential course with the National Film and Television school (NFTS) in London. You will also then be apart of the BFI Film Academy Alumni Network and be invited to take part in other opportunities with the other Alumni, the BFI and BAFTA.
I am not sure if I can pay the £25 course fee - does this mean I can't attend the course?
Not at all, if you are unable to pay the course fee then do not feel discouraged as this can be waived. Just let us know on your application form and we will be in touch.
A bursary scheme for the Academy ensures that costs will not prevent any filmmaker from taking part – if you have the talent we will make sure you can attend!
Can I apply if I am starting University in September?
Unfortunately, If you are currently at university, or will be enrolled at university when the course starts, you are not able to apply or take part in the Academy.
Where can I find out more about the Academy? You You can find out more about the Academy on our website or on the BFI website. If you have any other questions then do contact me by either emailing [email protected] or calling 01278 433187
