Getting in, Getting on: exploring economic barriers to Arts and Culture

Are you an artist, performer or filmmaker in Somerset that has faced economic barriers to making a career in the cultural sector? Are you trying to find progression routes but facing employment issues?

Covid-19 has forced many artists into severe financial crisis and is impacting on all of our mental health, emotional well-being and resilience. However, many socio-economic barriers existed pre-pandemic too. What were the things that made a difference to you when you were starting out? Are those things still in place? If not, what can be done about it?

Join us to hear the experiences of an established artist who endured years of inequality and navigated countless barriers to get established and to take part in discussion groups around this topic.

More details on the speaker and how to book will follow in due course.  Meanwhile, if you would like to reserve one of the limited free places, please email theatre@takeart.org with details of your access requirements if any. If you need help accessing the internet then again, let us know.

The Arts and Culture Diversity Forum Somerset enables artists and organisations to connect, collaborate and innovate through the sharing of knowledge and good practice. It aims to champion the Creative Case for Diversity by providing a platform for open and honest discussion to drive individual and collective action, thereby addressing issues and achieving change in Somerset.

The Diversity Forum is coordinated by Somerset Art Works, Somerset Film and Take Art. Together, we will facilitate two annual events, with each focusing on either a protected characteristic or a barrier to inclusion. As defined by the Equality Act 2010 and the Equality Duty 2011, protected characteristics are: age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion and belief, sex and sexual orientation. We recognise class and socio-economic status as barriers.
