In response to the continuing COVID-19 outbreak and lockdown, we’d like to update you on the steps were taking at Somerset Film to ensure the safety of our staff and Engine Room participants.

Since Friday the 20th of March, all Somerset Film staff have been working from home and we continue to regularly circulate emails about the coronavirus to keep all staff updated on government advice and our current policy. We continue to check our phone lines regularly and are working tirelessly to increase our online presence in order to ensure our services and expertise are as accessible as possible during this challenging time.

At Somerset Film we work closely with those at risk of social, economic and geographic isolation. Growing our online presence has therefore become our focus as we are determined to uphold our vision to exploit the capacity of creative film and media to:

  1. encourage creativity and innovation
  2. build media literacy and confidence with technology
  3. engender debate and critical thinking
  4. reduce the digital divide
  5. raise aspiration and self-esteem
  6. reduce social isolation
  7. strengthen cohesion

We understand that not everyone has access to the internet and technology and we are working to the best of our ability to ensure that no one gets left behind.

One of the ways in which we’ve been able to uphold our vision is through the Somerset Film Tablet Loan through which we are offering 7 tablet computers to children and young people with a disability or additional need living in the Sedgemoor area to loan for a month at a time. The COVID-19 pandemic is having a massive impact on the Film industry and all those who work in it. We continue to work closely with partner organisations and funders across the industry to ensure we are adhering to all necessary safety measures on set and have been going above and beyond to update our policies in response to government guidelines.

We have updated our Production Location Risk Assessment form in response to the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure the safety for all those on set and have taken into consideration those at higher risk of contracting the virus as well as mental health measures.

Here are some other additions to our Risk Assessment:

  • Hygiene measures
  • Staggered arrival, leaving and break times
  • All crockery/ utensils to be brought from home
  • Social distancing guidelines are in place
  • PPE to be provided for staff and freelancers instructed to adhere to measures at all times
  • Use of infrared thermometer
  • Use of floor markings to aid social distancing
  • Location/set changes to be taken into consideration

Somerset Film acknowledges the challenge we are facing as a company, community and industry and are certain that the impact will continue to affect us for some time. However, we are determined to stay vigilant, resilient and driven. Our focus is on staying connected to our community and supporting them and our staff to the very best of our ability. We look forward to a brighter future.
