Did you know that The Engine Room offers FREE one to one technical support sessions to help you develop your creative projects?
Each week local residents have access to equipment and expertise through pre-bookable sessions, which are staffed by a professional filmmaker.

In light of the current COVID-19 (coronavirus) outbreak, these sessions are now available ONLINE.

You can practice your skills or access digital equipment and software to develop a personal creative project. Past users have undertaken some amazing projects from editing short films and home movies to recording voiceover showreels, digitising old VHS tapes and animating for fun.

These sessions are not intended as a replacement for courses but subject to time we can probably get you started or resolve a technical problem relating to creative IT.

Somerset Film is a delivery partner with Calling the Shots on an exciting talent development scheme called New Creatives, co-funded by BBC Arts and Arts Council England; offering commissioning opportunities for emerging artists aged 16-30 years to create new work in film, audio or interactive media, designed for BBC platforms.

What is the New Creatives project?

Calling the Shots is running the New Creatives project for the South West region, working with partner organisations Somerset Film (Bridgwater), Kaleider (Exeter), Create Studios (Swindon), Screen Cornwall (Redruth) and Watershed (Bristol).

Who’s involved in the New Creatives project?

This is a unique partnership between the BBC, Arts Council England and five creative media production organisations across England, Calling the Shots (South West), ICA (London), Screen South (South East), Tyneside Cinema (The North) and the Rural Media Company (Midlands).

We offer a comprehensive range of film equipment for hire at competitive rates including microphones, DSLR camera and lenses, projectors and sound. We also provide reduced rates for 3 or more days hire.

Our drop in support sessions are a the perfect opportunity to get to know the equipment before you hire it. Take a look at our diary for details on our training courses too.

Our opening hours for collection/drop off of equipment is 9.30am - 5.30pm Monday to Friday.

Please note that on your first hire from us we require photo ID and something with your address on. A deposit may also be required.
