The Somerset Film bursary is a 12-week scheme enabling you to gain a small insight into the world of film-making and digital media. It is a voluntary role aimed at those aged over 18 years. During this time you’ll be asked to work with us for three days a week. This is an un-paid position but we have a budget of £250 for the duration of the bursary towards your expenses.
At The Engine Room as the bursary you will be able to observe and get involved in a wide range of activities that will contribute towards you becoming an all round freelancer filmmaker, from logging data, learning to use cameras and editing software, and sound recording, making DVD covers, to delivering films and invoicing. There’s a wide range of skills you need in order to be successful as a freelancer.
At The Engine Room we encourage creativity with all of the equipment available. We like people to gain new skills and have the opportunity to explore their own ideas and creativity, so you will also be encouraged to work on a personal project during your time here, utilising the skills you pick up along the way.
Whilst film-making is fun, there are essential day to day tasks you will undertake such as helping to keep equipment cupboards tidy and assist staff where needed. We try to give everyone as much hands on experience as possible.
We feel it’s fair to say that there is no clear route into the world of film-making, but what you put into the bursary scheme is what you will get out of it.
