Peace of Mind Season | Film Screening: Room to Breathe

Thursday, Jan 19, 2017 - Time: 7:30pm - 9:00pm
Room To Breathe is a surprising story of transformation as struggling kids in a San Francisco public middle school are introduced to the practice of mindfulness meditation. Topping the district in disciplinary suspensions, and with overcrowded classrooms creating a nearly impossible learning environment, overwhelmed administrators are left with stark choices: repeating the cycle of trying to force tuned-out children to listen, or to experiment with timeless inner practices that may provide them with the social, emotional, and attentional skills that they need to succeed. The first question is whether it’s already too late. Confronted by defiance, contempt for authority figures, poor discipline, and more interest in “social” than learning, can a young mindfulness teacher from Berkeley succeed in opening their minds and hearts. Benefit Screening | Pride with David 'Dai' Donovan

Thursday, Feb 25, 2016 - Time: 8:00pm - 9:45pm
The National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers in association with Somerset Film present the BAFTA award-winning comedy Pride cert 15. A special benefit screening, introduced by David 'Dai' Donovan, whose story this film tells (Q&A to follow) This film is inspired by an extraordinary true story. It's the summer of 1984, Margaret Thatcher is in power and the National Union of Mineworkers is on strike, prompting a London-based group of gay and lesbian activists to raise money to support the strikers' families. Initially rebuffed by the Union, the group identifies a tiny mining village in Wales and sets off to make their donation in person. As the strike drags on, the two groups discover that standing together makes for the strongest union of all. A clear winner that makes you laugh, cry, and generally want to party and parade like it’s 1984. Respect. Empire **** Pride vibrates with the same energy and uplift as a great stage show. It chases applause, and earns it. Daily Telegraph **** Watch the trailer here:

Getting A Media Job – Engine Room advice sessions

Friday, Jul 1, 2016 - Time: 10:00am - 4:00pm
30-minute one-to-one sessions for people in the early stages of a media career. It’s often your first or second job that are the most difficult to find, and competition can be extremely fierce. So it’s important to apply for the right jobs and internships, and to send a CV and covering letter that give the best impression. Bring your CV and a sample covering letter, plus a short showreel if you have one. Before the session, research the type of job you’re looking for and possible employers. Somerset Film trustee Andrew Buchanan has given many newcomers to the media industry their first job. His knowledge of what employers are looking for – and what they don’t like – comes from four decades working in the film and television industry. Please pre-book your session online - we will contact you to arrange your time slot for the day.

Film | I, Daniel Blake

Bridgwater and Taunton Unite Community Group presents Ken Loach's award-winning film I, Daniel Blake Daniel Blake (59) has worked as a joiner most of his life in Newcastle. Now, for the first time ever, he needs help from the State. He crosses paths with single mother Katie and her two young children, Daisy and Dylan. Katie’s only chance to escape a one-roomed homeless hostel in London has been to accept a flat in a city she doesn’t know, some 300 miles away. Daniel and Katie find themselves in no-man’s land, caught on the barbed wire of welfare bureaucracy as played out against the rhetoric of ‘striver and skiver’ in modern-day Britain. “If you only see one film this year, see this.” New Internationalist Winner - Palme d'Or - Cannes Film Festival 2016 ★★★★★ Metro, David Edwards – Daily Mirror, New Internationalist, Mark Kermode - The Observer, Morning Star, The Irish Times, Daily Star

Course | Analogue 16mm Filmmaking and Sound

Wednesday, May 10, 2017 - Friday, May 12, 2017Time: 10:00am - 4:00pm
...with filmmaker Tim Richmond and Sound Artist Stephen Kidd. There is a particular quality that analogue film delivers, a rounded tonal, lightly grained quality that reveals a sense of depth. This four day workshop will look at the technical aspects of shooting on film, including lens choice, film stock choices, lighting, the camera itself and the capturing of sound. In particular, you will explore the consideration and preparation required for filming with a limited quantity of film stock. Participants will spend one day 'on set' observing the processes involved in making a short film and the creative choices. Finally the film will be sent off for processing and telecine-ing and participants will gather on the footage's return to view what has been captured and to observe the editing process. Course Dates: 10th - 12th May 2017 - One further date TBC Please note: 12th May will be on location. Details to be confirmed. Click here to see an example of Tim and Stephen's collaborative work shot in Somerset and here to view their latest short with director Lee Wallick, which was shot in the U.S. for online video channel 'Nowness'.

Belonging | Session 3: Article Seven

Saturday, May 20, 2017 - Time: 11:00am - 1:00pm
Following on from our Peace of Mind installation in December, this coming year we explore the theme of Belonging. Many of us might recognise Belonging as describing the sense of individual wellbeing that can come from feeling that ‘we belong’. How is that feeing of security affected when society is changing rapidly around us? Taking key articles from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights we invite you to join us in an initial series of five sessions exploring the implication and relevance of human rights to our sense of Belonging in our communities and nations.   From each session we will generate your different responses – spoken, drawn, recorded – from which we will create an archived contribution to the Belonging events at the end of the year. In this session we consider Article 7: ‘All are equal before the law and are entitled without any discrimination to equal protection of the law’ with speaker plus keynote film from Legal Aid specialist solicitor.

Our latest work

Our latest news

Our latest news

Over the past 15 years, from a start-up investment of just £5000, Somerset Film has generated over £4,500,000 investment for creative media arts in Somerset, having commissioned and employed over 200 arts and media professionals.

Our films have won awards from Canada to Croatia, and have been shown at festivals around the world…

We work with people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities, prioritising those at risk of social or physical isolation or exclusion. Not just in Bridgwater, but right across Somerset with projects like Family Connections and Capture Burnham, and recently our satellite Pop-up initiative.

We also work with and train artists (of all disciplines) and businesses, in a predominantly rural setting, to develop ways to communicate more effectively and flourish using the internet and new digital technology.
