We will then return to The Chapel for the final half an hour and look at some basic editing of your photos in either Adobe Lightroom or Photoshop. Belong in Bridgwater | Exhibition

Monday, Jul 16, 2018 - Saturday, Jul 28, 2018Time: 10:00am - 4:00pm
What does it mean to…Belong in Bridgwater A Bridgwater Town Council Project, delivered by Somerset Film and Supported by Big Lottery Fund Since the start of 2018, we have worked on the Belonging in Bridgwater project which has helped strengthen community ties as the town negotiates this time of rapid growth and change. We worked with local communities to explore what it means to 'Belong in Bridgwater'. What it means to belong in the town, and to be part of the local community? And equally, what does it feel like if you feel that you do not belong? What makes Bridgwater feel like home to you?  Somerset Film has supported the project by creating opportunities for local people from all backgrounds and of all ages to share their stories and experiences on film and tape and to reflect on what it means to belong here. Join us at The Engine Room this July to discover what reflections were made at our exciting interactive, digital exhibition. Also! add your own thoughts and share what it means to you to belong here... No need to book just pop in! Open 10am until 4pm Monday to Friday and at Bridgwater Quayside Festival on Saturday 21st July 2018

Film | LGBT Britain

Thursday, May 17, 2018 - Time: 7:30pm - 9:45pm
LGBT equalityTo mark International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, in association with Unite Somerset Community and Unite South West. Britain’s LGBT history is the inspiring subject for this collection of archive films from the BFI. Featuring moving and fascinating films spanning 1909 to 1994, the screening programme documents a century in which homosexuality went from crime to Pride, via decades of profoundly courageous activism, and the shifting attitudes to LGBT people and their rights throughout a time of explosive social change. It includes some of the earliest known representations of LGBT people on screen, the collection includes a 1925 film on ‘Cutie Cattaro’, a boxer more interested in flirting than fighting and a drag queen, ‘Percy’ competing for a prize in 1909. Later films explore the struggles and identity politics of the ‘80s and ‘90s, including early AIDS victims recounting their painful experiences, and the fight for transgender rights in the European Court. Cert PG | 85 mins | Director: Various Please Note: This film contains a sequence of flashing lights which might affect customers who are susceptible to photosensitive epilepsy. Doors Open 7pm. Film | Bridgwater Film Night presents The Levelling

Thursday, Jun 7, 2018 - Time: 7:30pm - 9:30pm
The inaugural Bridgwater Film Night in association with Bridgwater Cultural Partners and hosted by The Engine Room will shine a light on an award winning story set during a significant time in Somerset’s recent history. The Levelling (2016) is an emotional journey that follows the homecoming of trainee vet Clover Catto (Ellie Kendrick) as she returns to Somerset in the wake of the 2014 floods and the tragic apparent suicide of her brother Harry Aubrey (Joe Blackmore). Forced to confront her already estranged father (David Troughton) Clover faces a childhood home forever changed by the devastation of the flooding and a struggle to come to terms her family, the loss of her brother and herself. The events that serve as the backdrop to this harrowing tale will resonate with many people in the area and this film was chosen because of that local connection. Bridgwater town was less directly affected by the floods of 2014 so The Levelling offers a window in to the events and their impact on the surrounding rural area. Despite being a work of fiction the way in which this film is shot and the use of a lesser known cast give it a distinctly natural feeling of realism. The Levelling has been nominated for several awards such as the Sutherland Award (2016), The Audience Award at Glasgow Film Festival (2017) and The British Independent Film Award (2016). In 2017 Hope Dickson won the BAFTA Scotland Award for Best Writer (Film/Television) for this outstanding depiction of a family in crisis. Come along and join us in support of this incredible local film, hosted at a unique local venue by a team of enthusiastic film lovers. Doors open 7pm for 7.30pm screening.   Ticket cost tbc

Film | Engine Room Film Club for 9 - 14 year olds

Saturday, Jul 7, 2018 - Time: 10:30am - 12:00pm
For ages 9 – 14. Join our FREE monthly film club. Enjoy feature films old and new - as chosen by YOU! Vote to choose which film is shown here! We'll announce the winning film on June 2nd. Parents Information: Into Film is a British Film Institute funded activity. It aims to  make a wide range of films available to young people, which challenge, unite, educate, amaze and inspire. Normally we will show films that are suitable for your children's age but from time to time we may show a higher certification than your child's age group which we deem suitable and appropriate. For example a PG rating. On your child's first visit we will ask you to sign a consent form and they will receive a membership card to show each time they attend. After each film we try to include a very short film-related fun activity.

Film | Dispossession - The Great Social Housing Swindle

Tuesday, Sep 4, 2018 - Time: 7:30pm - 9:30pm

Presented by Somerset Unite Community....

“Perhaps the most important British Film since I, Daniel Blake” The Big Issue

This film explores the agenda behind the neglect, demolition and regeneration of council estates in the U.K. over the past thirty years. Narrated by Maxine Peake, the film reveals how individuals and communities are fighting against the state and private developers, as they try to save their homes from demolition, while investigating the decisions that turned a crisis into a tragedy.

The screening will follow a short presentation by Nick Hubbard Research and Campaigns Officer at Bridgwater'Citizens Advice Bureau on a recent housing report he has prepared titled "Home is Where The Heart Is", written for Sedgemoor District Council in preparation of the introduction of the Homelessness Prevention Act. You can read a summary of the report in advance here.

Event | Over the Wall Picking Apples

Wednesday, Oct 10, 2018 - Time: 7:30pm - 9:30pm

Written and performed by Richard Crowe

Directed by Ged Stephenson

Designed by Kasha Miller

Produced by Wassail Theatre Company

Happily married with a lovely house on the Somerset Levels, Richard could have settled down to life as a withy weaver, cider maker or llama farmer. But then the fish tank started singing to him –the same song over and over, day after day. It was enough to drive him mad.

This is the story of Richard’s response to all this: his admission into the mental health service, a diagnosis of bipolar disorder, medication (the highs…the lows) and making sense of a lifetime lived over the wall picking apples.

Join Richard on his emotional roller-coaster as he squares up to the frightening, the furious and the funny sides of mad.

It’s no laughing matter – but it will make you laugh.

This show is suitable for ages 15+.

OVER THE WALL PICKING APPLES has been developed with attention to the mental health needs of Richard, the team and audiences.  Our approach to safeguarding audiences with mental health conditions includes:

      • A post-show discussion after every performance
      • Sign posting information in the free programme notes
      • A trigger warning sheet available before or after booking
      • Volunteers from Samaritans present at every show

Exhibition | Shannon Watson - Somerset Open Studios

Monday, Sep 17, 2018 - Friday, Sep 28, 2018Time: 10:00am - 4:00pm

Somerset Film Artist in Residence 2018

This residency was designed by Somerset Film to provide an opportunity for a recent graduate to explore the creative potential of digital technology at their base, The Engine Room in Bridgwater, Somerset.

Through social engagement, Shannon Watson uses her work as a platform to facilitate discussions around social situations. The result of this is often performative. From swimming lessons at the Tate, to a collaborative project with Imperfect Orchestra, in her work the viewer becomes a performer, a fluid position to be explored.

Open Studios is a countywide event co-ordinated by Somerset Art Works - we will showcase the results of Shannon's research and development inspired by her time at Somerset Film.

10am - 4pm Monday - Friday 17 - 28 September
