Film | The Gleaners and I

Friday, Nov 22, 2019 - Time: 7:00pm - 9:00pm

An 1867 painting by Jean-Francois Millet inspired documentarian Agnes Varda to cross the French countryside to videotape people who scavenge. Taking everything from surplus in the fields, to rubbish in trashcans, to oysters washed up after a storm, the "gleaners" range from those sadly in need to those hoping to recreate the community activity of centuries past, and still others who use whatever they find to cobble together a rough art.

Film | Clean Bin Project

Thursday, Sep 19, 2019 - Time: 7:00pm - 9:00pm

Is it possible to live completely waste free? In this multi-award winning, festival favourite, partners Jen and Grant go head to head in a competition to see who can swear off consumerism and produce the least garbage Their light-hearted competition is set against a darker examination of the problem waste.

Even as Grant and Jen start to garner interest in their project, they struggle to find meaning in their minuscule influence on the large-scale environmental impacts of our “throw-away society”. Described as An Inconvenient Truth meets Super Size Me, The Clean Bin Project features laugh out loud moments, stop motion animations, and unforgettable imagery. Captivating interviews with renowned artist, Chris Jordan and TED Lecturer Captain Charles Moore, make this film a fun and inspiring call to individual action that speaks to crowds of all ages.

Our latest work

News

Over the past 15 years, from a start-up investment of just £5000, Somerset Film has generated over £4,500,000 investment for creative media arts in Somerset, having commissioned and employed over 200 arts and media professionals.

Our films have won awards from Canada to Croatia, and have been shown at festivals around the world…

We work with people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities, prioritising those at risk of social or physical isolation or exclusion. Not just in Bridgwater, but right across Somerset with projects like Family Connections and Capture Burnham, and recently our satellite Pop-up initiative.

We also work with and train artists (of all disciplines) and businesses, in a predominantly rural setting, to develop ways to communicate more effectively and flourish using the internet and new digital technology.
