Recent Projects

Our activities vary throughout the year in response to the needs of our communities. Our programme of community engagement, talent development and creative production is subject to funds raised and/or the income generated by our services. Here are some projects and activities undertaken in the last eighteen months to inform and perhaps to inspire you if you are thinking of activity in your community. We’re continually learning, evolving our practice and exploring new areas so if you have an idea for something in your community then we’d love to talk to you. Get in touch!

  • Moments on Mendip

A new contemporary art event for Cheddar, supported by Seed Sedgemoor.

As the autumn light faded, audiences immersed themselves in images by commissioned artist Elizabeth Woodger and local photographers, projected onto the natural wonder that is Cheddar Gorge. Each of Elizabeth’s images celebrated one of the twelve special qualities of the Mendip Hills AONB.

The project began with photography workshops for the public, some exploring wellbeing and the connection with nature, and a callout for images from the public.

Over 1200 people attended the event, co-ordinated by Mendip Hills AONB and Somerset Film, working with Windrose Media.

  • Kinokotch

A street cinema project for Wells, supported by Mendip Community Fund.

Working In partnership with Fabian’s Films and Dr John Sealey, we sought to explore and build connections between individuals and the cities in which they live and work.‘Kino’ in Europe means cinema. ‘Kotch’ is a Jamaican slang expression for hanging or chilling at a location for a temporary amount of time.

Following a programme of community filmmaking workshops , developing digital skills, we commissioned and supported the creation of two new films by local inhabitants with narratives inspired by their own experience and in their own localised spaces. The final films - “We Have Nothing But Each Other’ and “Well, Well, Wells.” were premiered in the locations they were inspired by.

The final films are a testament to the value of outdoor community spaces and the importance of caring for the environment

  • Making Music Out Of Everyday Objects

A digital music project for adults wtih learning difficulties across the county.

This community project used technology to enable participants to create music through touch. Our participants included five day-care and residential care settings for adults with learning disabilities from across Somerset. Led by musician and composer Daniel Birch, our music-makers got to produce their own disco tracks.

Everything around us has the potential to make sound, we can also make sounds: sensible or silly…LOUD or quiet. In these workshops participants recorded their voices and used everyday objects. They also got the opportunity to remix famous songs on the vegetable piano and compose an artistic graphic score.

Their tracks was showcased at a special Christmas Disco at The Engine Room complete with smoke machine!
