BFI Film Academy South West is an introductory course for young people who are thinking about their future careers in the screen industries and want to discover more about the wide range of roles and training pathways available.
Whether you're interested in the creative, technical or business side of film and television, this opportunity will connect young people with training opportunities, industry connections and career support closer to home.
During the course, you will gain knowledge and confidence to help inform your future decisions. This opportunity is for young people aged 16 - 19, or up to 25, who receive an EHC plan (an education, health and care plan).
The BFI Film Academy South West Introductory Course with Somerset Film helps you develop practical filmmaking skills through:
Masterclasses and workshops led by experienced film professionals.
Training in filmmaking, editing, lighting, sound and script analysis.
Understanding of professional roles and industry best practices.
Hands-on experience creating a short film with professional actors, covering pre-production, production and post-production.
Support with CVs and portfolios, plus industry-recognised training passports and certificates.
Guidance towards future opportunities in the screen industries.
The course gives you the skills, experience, knowledge and confidence in filmmaking to take your next step towards a career in film and the wider screen industries.
This is a FREE course, with a limited number of places available.

Location: The course will be delivered in Minehead in Somerset.
Dates:
Online welcome on Friday 23rd October (one hour in the evening).
In person sessions are on Saturday 24th, Monday 26th, Tuesday 27th, Wednesday 28th, Thursday 29th, and Friday 30th October 2026 (10am - 4.30pm).
