Don’t just go to the movies, make one yourself! Young people in Wellington are invited to participate in our second ever 48 hour film challenge. Register for the challenge and you will be invited to the launch event, where you will be assigned a line of dialogue and prop that must be included in your film. You will then have 48 hours to write, shoot or animate, and edit a film up to three minutes long in the genre of your choice. Tell your story with a phone, tablet, or DSLR. All eligible films made and submitted by the end of the 48 hours will receive a screening at Wellington Film Festival and be in with a chance of winning an award. Directors, cast and crew will be given tickets for the screening.

Make a movie in a weekend, that’s right, only 48 hours! Are you a filmmaker aged under 21? Then this is the challenge for you! The 48 hour period will start on Friday 22nd August at 4pm and end on Sunday 24th August at 4pm.

Complete the Wellington Film Festival 48 Hour Film Registration Form to register yourself and/or your team. At the launch event, on Friday 22nd August at Wellington Arts Centre 5.30pm to receive the mystery line of dialogue and prop.
Register by Thursday 21st August.

When is it?
The 48 hour Film Challenge will take place during the Summer Holidays from Friday 22nd to Sunday 24th August. The 48 hour period will start on Friday at 6pm and end on Sunday at 6pm.
When you register we will ask you to nominate a director who must be under the age of 21. If you are under the age of 18 then the director must also have parental/carer permission to take part. Registration is open now and will close on August 18th 2025.
The launch event will take place at Wellington Arts Centre from 5.30pm. If you are unable to attend the launch we will email the challenge details to you but you will have to source the identified prop yourself.
Who can participate?
The filmmaking challenge is open to individuals and teams of filmmakers. A team can include adults but the director must be under the age of 21.
We will ask you to give us a list of names of your cast and crew and their ages and this will be taken into consideration during judging. To qualify for an award and be eligible for screening, entrants must adhere to the official 48 Hour Filmmaking Challenge Rules (read them on the Wellington Film Festival website)
How do I submit my final film?
Your final film will need to be either a .mov or MP4 file. To submit your film either:
Email a YouTube link to the finished film to: wellingtonfilmfest@somersetfilm.com
Send the film file via wetransfer or similar file transfer service to: wellingtonfilmfest@somersetfilm.com
Bring the film on a memory stick or hard drive to Wellington Community Centre by 4pm on Sunday 24th August 2024.
We will ask you to send copies of your signed release forms at a later date.
When will the winning films be shown?
The awards will be announced and the winning films will be shown on as part of Wellington Film Festival on TBC at Wellington Arts Centre. Two tickets will be reserved for shortlisted directors in each category. Once booking goes live we will update this page with a link to book places for your adoring fans, cast and crew.
