Workshop | Soundscape Composition

  • Somerset Film at The Engine Room 50-52 High Street Bridgwater, Somerset TA6 3BL United Kingdom (map)

£120 + booking fee

In this full-day introduction to Soundscape Composition, you will explore the art of creating immersive audio experiences using your natural surroundings as a rich source of inspiration.

The workshop will begin at the Engine Room with an introduction before heading out into the surrounding landscape for practical field recording activities. Please note that the field location is approximately a 15-minute walk from the Engine Room, so suitable footwear and weather-appropriate clothing are recommended.

You'll learn the basics of field recording, capturing the unique sounds of the environment, whether it's the rustle of leaves, the flow of water with hydrophones, or the textures of soil and rock using contact microphones. Participants will also discover innovative techniques such as recording MIDI data from plants using the PlantWave device and creating musical elements to layer into their soundscapes. Using tools including omni-directional microphones for 3D sound and the Koala Sampler for on-the-spot creativity, you'll build an understanding of how to transform ordinary sounds into extraordinary audio experiences.

By the end of the day, you'll have gained hands-on experience in field recording and soundscape composition, along with an appreciation of how sound can be used to evoke atmosphere, tell stories, and deepen our connection to the natural environment.

No previous experience is required. All equipment will be provided.
