Local Artist Goes Virtual
Every year in September, distinctive yellow signs pop up in Somerset streets and lanes, with the intention of directing the general public to local artistic talent. This year is no exception with Somerset Open Studios, co-ordinated by Somerset Art Works, taking place from this weekend: from Saturday 13th to 28th September.
Not every artist can open their studio, for a variety of reasons, including accessibility. This year, we decided to use our artist in residence opportunity to address the issue. We selected local artist Tina Salvidge for the residency and have supported her to create a unique VR version of the studio where she works.
Creative Director Deb Richardson said, “Tina has not just recreated her studio, she has exploded it visually. Using LiDAR scanning, 360 cameras and an online platform called Spatial, she not only showcases her talent and the heritage of the place where she works, she also reveals the creative potential of using this technology. It’s harnessing it to do more than make an online version of the real world, Tina shows we can realise new spaces. In addition to her studio, Tina has created new worlds that you can explore through portals.”
The approach could mean that other artists who are unable to participate in Open Studios weeks are still able to share their practice and the spaces that inspire them. Our team have also been using the same technology over the last twelve months to engage people of all ages; scanning sculptures made of LEGO and objects in the outdoor spaces to place in online galleries and landscapes.
Tina’s VR studio can be experienced through VR headsets at The Engine Room, 52 High Street, Bridgwater TA6 3BL. Visitors can also see some of the original objects Tina scanned for inclusion. The venue is open Monday to Friday, 10am - 3pm until 26th September and entry is free. Tina will also be present most afternoons to answer questions about her work and the process of making this virtual space.
